DANIEL HAD TO GET OUT of there and quick. All the pent-up anger he’d felt for her had gone down the drain the moment she embraced her son. The very one who’d opened up to him about how worried he was for his mother, despite his desire to trust in the Lord with their futures.

Such a grown up little man. Intelligent, well-mannered, and helpful in setting the benches in place. For a split second, he almost allowed his mind to drift toward the possibility of having his own son someday. He’d told himself bachelorhood was fine. That he didn’t need a family so long as he could put in an honest day of work. There was nothing to divide his time and attention. And his work showed for it.

Yep, it was time to head home. He’d explain to Pop what happened. Suffer through another lecture, then let the old man handle meeting with her again.

Daniel almost reached the driver’s door when Sara grabbed hold of his arm. “Wait. Listen, I want to make up today. I didn’t mean to stand you up.”

His teeth ground together. “You mean, Pop, right? The appointment was with him. He makes the contracts, I just fill them.”

Undaunted by his gruff tone, she smiled up at him with those deep green eyes. Darn those long lashes! Were they even real?

“Fine, I’ll call him, too. But tomorrow, I’m coming for lunch. And I’m bringing it, too. Then the three of us can sit down and visit.”

He tried to come up with something he needed to do tomorrow, but couldn’t find anything. Work was slow this time of year. At least until people started getting their tax returns and wanted to use the money for remodeling projects.

“That won’t be—”

She already had her phone out and was pressing a couple of buttons. He tried not to visibly cringe when he heard Pop’s voice on the other end.

“Hey Paul, it’s Sara. I’m calling to apologize for not making our meeting. I had a little mishap, but I’ll let your son explain when he sees you. Can we reschedule for tomorrow? I can’t get Danny-boy to commit to anything. He says you’re the boss man. So...yes, I have him right here.” She listened to the line, a smile growing across her face. The freckles splattered across her narrow nose hadn’t dimmed in the least.

He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, wondering when she’d release his arm.

Sara giggled with a roll of her eyes. “I don’t believe you for one second Paul McAlister. My granny told me what a trickster you’ve become. So what about tomorrow? I’m providing the lunch this time. How does sandwiches sound? Haley always has a ton of food in that big fridge of hers. I’m sure I can whip up something good for us.” She laughed again. It was the sweetest sound.

Oh man, he needed to get a grip. Leaning against the truck’s door, he let out a loud sigh, letting her know she was keeping him from nothing important.
